When an attacker is approaching, the person only has a split second to decide whether to dodge or block the move of the opponent. There is no point thinking about what this happened in the first place but the concern now is just to stop it.

In a fight, the person can make a counter attack in the hopes that the individual will be subdued. There is another way of course without resorting to force, which is the technique one can learn in aikido.

Aikido is a martial art in which the person blocks the moves of an opponent by using the hands. Anyone who wants to learn it will not be able to move as fast as Steven Segal in one of his action films but still be effective in combat.

This martial art cannot be learned by merely watching others do it in the movies or in television. There are some who even show the step by step process in a magazine but nothing still compares to learning it from a Sensei.

The person must first become a student in order to be called a master. This means learning the basic rules from entering the dojo until the class is over. The person will surely feel some pain after falling down a few times on the mat but this is not to torture the pupil.

This is all part of the training, which the student must also do properly in order to move into the more advanced classes.

One of the secrets is being able to know when to use it since timing is everything. There is a bit of hand to eye coordination just like in sports but here, the individual will merely redirect the same force back to that individual.

Another secret in using aikido has to do with the wrist. The person should be smooth enough to put one hand over the opponents to be able to make the technique work and counter the attack.

It takes a certain amount of energy to be able to perform certain moves. The individual will learn the various breathing exercises that will increase the heart rate and slow it down especially in the heat of the action.

The student should bear in mind that the breathing exercises also serves as a unifying force between the physical and the emotional aspect of the person.

The most important secret in mastering aikido is being consistent with the technique. The arms will surely feel heavy after some time or a certain amount of energy is drained after a few moves. By being able to do the same thing despite these difficulties, anyone can truly be called a true martial artist.

People who want to check on how well one is doing can sign up for Tomiki Aikido. This is a competition held by various clubs in which the student will compete among some of the best in the country.

Those who do well here can move up to the next skill level just like in karate where a student moves from one belt to another. If after many years, that student has learned all the secrets that go with aikido, this is the only time one can be called a master and even open a dojo.

Aikido is a unique form of martial art. Its emphasis lies on the harmonious fusion of mind and body with the natural laws of Nature. Aikido focuses on accepting and respecting the energy of life and nature and channeling this harmony onto techniques that expresses this energy in physical forms.

Aikido is often viewed as more of a defensive martial art since its techniques and teachings are designed for you to avoid or get out of trouble. On the contrary, Aikido’s techniques are very powerful and effective.

Basically, there are four levels of technique in Aikido training. These are the katai which refers to the basic training and is intended to build the foundation of body movements and breathing; the yawarakai trains the defendant to deflect attacks and fuse movements to take control of the attacker or situation; the ki-no-nagare which involves training the defendant to defend or counter attack by merging his movement with the attacker even before the latter makes contact; and the ki which is the absolute Aikido technique and involves establishing a link of ki or spirit from the defender to the attacker.

When training for Aikido, you need a sparring partner. The uke and the nage. The Uke is the initiator of the attack and receives the Aikido techniques, while the Nage is the defender and the one that neutralizes the attack.

Aikido basic techniques include ikky which involves control an attacker by placing one hand on the elbow and one on near the wrist giving an opportunity to throw the attacker to the ground; the niky which draws in the uke using a wristlock and twists the arm while applying painful nerve pressure; sanky which is a rotating technique aimed at applying a spiraling tension on the whole arm including the elbow and shoulder; yonky a shoulder control technique with both hands gripping the forearm; goky is another variant of ikky

wherein the hand gripping the wrist is inverted and is quite useful in weapon take-aways; shihnage or the four-direction throw; kotegaeshi or wrist return which involves a wristlock-throw that stretches the extensor digitorum; kokynage also known as breath throws or timing throws; iriminage or entering-body throws which resembles a “clothesline” technique; tenchinage or heaven-and-earth throw; koshinage or the Aikido’s version of the hip throw; jinage or the shaped-like-’ten’-throw; and kaitennage or rotation throw wherein the nage sweeps the arm of the uke back until it locks the shoulder joint after which the nage applies forward pressure to throw the attacker.

These are just basic techniques and from the list thousands of possible implementations or combinations can be drawn by the aikidokas. In Aikido, the strikes employed during the implementation of the Aikido technique are called atemi. For beginners, grabs are the first ones to be taught. It is safer and the aikidoka can easily feel the energy flowing from the uke to the nage.

Among the basic grab techniques are the katate-dori or single-hand-grab which involves using one hand to grab one wrist; morote-dori or both-hands-grab which uses both hands to grab one wrist; ryte-dori another both-hands-grab technique wherein both hands are used to grab both wrists; kata-dori or the shoulder-grab technique; and the mune-dori or chest-grab which involves grabbing the clothing of the chest of the attacker.

Mastering each technique involves discipline and dedication. To be a good aikodoka, one must master both the techniques and principle of the marital art.

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art, game, and culture created by enslaved Africans in Brazil during the 17th Century. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the center of the circle. The game is marked by fluid acrobatic play, feints, subterfuge, and extensive use of groundwork, as well as sweeps, kicks, and headbutts. Throughout the game, a player must avoid a sweep, trip, kick, or head butt that may knock him or her on the floor. Less frequently-used techniques include elbow-strikes, slaps, punches, and body-throws. Capoeira has three variations known as “Capoeira Angola”, “Capoeira Regional”, and the ever-evolving “Capoeira Contemporânea”.

From the 16th to the 19th centuries, Portugal shipped slaves into South America from western Africa. The South American country of Brazil was the most common destination for African captives[citation needed] with 42% of all enslaved peoples shipped across the Atlantic. Most commonly sold into Brazil were Akan, Igbo, Yoruba, Dahomean, Muslim Guineans, Hausa, and Bantu (among them Kongos, Kimbundas and Kasanjes) from Angola, Congo and Mozambique.

These Africans brought their cultural traditions and religions with them to the New World. One theory suggests that capoeira originated from a fern courtship dance[citation needed] in Angola used by suitors of young women, however, this is only one of many disputed theories. There is contention as to whether the game arrived with enslaved Africans or whether Africans refined a preexisting Brazilian game. One catalyst for capoeira was the homogenization of African people under the oppression of slavery. Capoeira emerged as a way to resist oppression, secretly practice art, transmit culture, and lift spirits. Some historians believe that the indigenous peoples of Brazil also played an important role in the development of capoeira.

Capoeira was advanced by Brazilian slaves of African descent (presumably admitted from the Portuguese colony of Angola) some time in the 16th century. since it was illegal for slaves to practice fighting skills, they varied native African spiritual dances so that each time they practised their art they might appear to merely be dancing. Due to the fact these dances included manoeuvres such as handstands, back flips, and cartwheels, Capoeira is today the most energetic of all martial arts, with many kicks being executed from a handstand position. Its offensive techniques are initially kicks, its defensive techniques are in the beginning body movements which stay away from the enemy’s attack all together. African culture is a large part of studying Capoeira, above all since training and competition is done to the rhythm of the berimbau, a single- stringed musical instrument. Only in the 20th century has the practice of Capoeira become legal in Brazil, and Only in very modern years has it been taught in other countries.

In 1942, Mestre Pastinha opened the first formal academy for instruction in the traditional form of the art, known as capoeira Angola. Mestre Pastinha’s efforts prevented capoeira Angola from being lost as newer, modernized forms of the art gained popularity.

This era was a milestone of a dramatic change in the mode of instruction of the art of capoeira. Previously, capoeira was passed on in secret, usually from a relative such as one’s father or uncle, or in a small group setting where several young people in a particular community would receive guidance from elder practitioners from that community. During this era, the academy system became the predominant form of participation in the art. Presently, there are capoeira academies on almost every continent of the world.

Another significant change that occurred due to the proliferation of capoeira ‘schools’ is the participation of middle and upper class members of the population. Presently, some Mestres participate in seminars where they discuss the need to make the art available to poor blacks who can not afford the cost of training in an academy. This is an issue of concern to practitioners who recognize the importance of making the art available to people who come from the culture that invented the art in the first place.

Capoeira training can be done in any city in the world and I encourage you to visit out martial arts directory of Capoeira to find a school near you!

Jujitsu is a 2500 year old unarmed combat discipline that has its roots in ancient Japan. The exact date on the creation of this martial art form is hard to trace but techniques resembling that of Jujitsu had already been incorporated into the training methods of the Samurai, from the 8th to the 6th centuries. Earliest Japanese historical records such as the Kojiki (Record of Ancient Matters) and the Nihon Shoki (Chronicles of Japan) also have passages related to unarmed combat systems.

Before this Japanese martial art developed into what we know as Jujitsu today, there were many other Japanese combat techniques such as Kogusoku, yawara, kumiuchi, and hakuda etc, also collectively known as Sengoku Jujutsu. Traditions finally gave rise to the modern Nihon Jujutsu we know today, which is classified under Edo Jujutsu – the true unarmed Japanese combat system.

Jujitsu gained prominence during the reign of Tokugawa in the 1600s but was soon alienated when Emperor Melse regained power. However, towards the mid-20th century, the ban on Jujitsu in Japan was lifted, following the Meiji restoration, and the combat art form began to be widely practiced.

The Philosophy:

Jujitsu revolves around three basic states of mind – Zanshin, Mushin and Fudoshin. The proper combination of these elements gave the power, preparation and potential to the practitioner to excel in the Jujitsu art.

1. Zanshin – “remaining spirit” – connotes the readiness for anything at any given time.

2. Mushin – “no mind” – Its spontaneity permits instantaneous action without conscious thought.

3. Fudoshin – “immovable mind” –during times of confrontation.

Basic Methods:

Jujitsu is a circular, hard and soft, external combat style. The basic techniques of attacks includes throws, locks, hitting and striking, thrusting and punching, pinning and immobilizing, strangling and joint-locking, with strong emphasis on throws, locks, and defensive techniques. In-fighting and close work are also focused upon.

Even though Jujitsu is basically an unarmed fighting system, small weapons like the Jitte (truncheon), Tanto (knife), or Kakushi Buki (hidden weapons), which include the Ryofundo Kusari (weighted chain) or the Bankokuchoki (a type of knuckle-duster) may also be used in combat.

Competition Systems:

Conventional Jujitsu can be dangerous, or maybe even fatal if its fundamental techniques were to be applied. So, in order to make the art a safer sport for the competitive arena, systems and rules have to be introduced. That is why most of the competition methods have incorporated “Half-contact”, which prohibits serious attempts to knock out an opponent.

1. The Fighting System: This is the most popular method, divided into three phases. The first is for striking only, the second for striking, grappling and throwing, and the third includes ground-fighting such as chokeholds.

2. The Practical System: According to this rule, two defenders are surrounded by four attackers from four corners. Highest points go to the best defender judged upon effectiveness, oversight and control of the situation.

3. The Duo System: In this system, contestants are randomly chosen and awarded points for effective defences. The attacks are divided into four groups of five attacks each.

4. Combat Jujitsu: The most recent system developed in the United States. Victory in the competition is based on submission. The combat round between the two opponents lasts for not more than two minutes.

Sometimes one would see references to ‘hard’ style and ‘soft’ style martial arts. To many non-martial artists, these terms may be puzzling. In North America, these terms are used to classify martial art styles into two main categories. Japanese/Okinawan karate and Korean tae kwon do are generally referred to as hard styles. Movements in both karate and tae kwon do are often linear with their forms (traditional sequence of set moves) performed with crisp movements. Chinese kung fu styles are usually referred to as soft styles.

The circular motions of kung fu forms give them a more visually graceful or softer appearance especially when many of the movements flow from one to another. Even Korean kuk sool won which is sometimes referred to as ‘Korean kung fu’, is often classified as a soft style since its movements are also more flowing than the stop and go of tae kwon do or karate. This is not to say that hard styles such as karate or tae kwon do are more powerful martial arts than kung fu and other soft styles. The term ‘soft’ is a bit misleading because the power from circular kung fu moves are often hidden. Circular moves can generate just as much power as linear ones.

The terms hard style and soft style came as a result of the evolution of North American martial arts competitions, particularly in forms divisions. For many years, open karate tournaments which allowed all martial arts styles, had competitors from different martial arts backgrounds compete in the same forms divisions. All equivalent level competitors, whether they used a Japanese/Okinawan karate kata, a Korean tae kwon do pattern or a Chinese kung fu form, competed together in the same divisions. This provided a nice martial arts showcase for spectators especially at the bigger tournaments. However, some competitors and judges considered divisions with combined styles to be too complicated. For example, judges who were familiar with only Japanese or Korean styles had a difficult time scoring competitors performing Chinese kung fu forms. Sometimes competitors from different martial art styles felt that judges were being biased against them. Judging a hard style form against a soft style form was often like trying to compare apples to oranges.

To help resolve these issues, many of the larger martial arts tournaments expanded to have separate divisions for hard and soft styles. This was a way to equalize things and add some more fairness to all competitors. The largest tournaments went another step ahead and further separated Japanese karate stylists from Korean tae kwon do stylists by putting them into different divisions too.

This still left many kempo stylists up in the air because their particular forms have both hard and soft style elements since their movements are both linear as well as circular. Some promoters of large tournaments decided to accommodate kempo stylists by adding in separate forms divisions just for their style too. Of course many smaller local tournaments have not been able to offer separate hard and soft style divisions for martial arts forms competitors mainly because of financial budget restrictions. The terms hard style and soft style are used only in North America and parts of Europe since these are the only regions of the world that have open martial arts competitions.

Martial arts competitions in other parts of the world such as Asia are generally restricted to certain specific styles only.

All the martial arts have been altered due to the function that mechanical devices play whether it be weapons, dojo mats, breaking boards or even the uniforms we wear – all these paraphanialia indentify the martial arts into their systems and style.

The main players in shaping our new martial arts would surely be the non-contemporary wooden dummy, ving tsun rings, iron palm ointments and even the system of using forms and karta have developed the martial arts into their current form.

Even today modern training tools are common and again the martial arts are evolving and growing with new training products such as the Wavemaster, the BOB training dummy, the Focus Master. All with a common idea, to create a well rounded combat system.

Ideally a martial arts solo training tool definately has to be workable for all and based on great background ideals and through constant drilling develop into sound physical application. The ideology and theory would have to take into account all the history of the combat technology of man and give this competition and street application.

Being psychologically prepared is critical for self defense during an assault in the street. It is very important to be ready to repel the assailant (assailants) using all the means you have. Note that even being in not very good physical shape these means could be quite sufficient to disable your enemy (enemies).

For example, if you wear hard sharp-toe shoes, then kicking your enemy in groin or shank with the toe of such shoe (even if there are no years of practice behind this kick) immediately makes him writhe with pain for several moments. And this gives you enough time to either disable the enemy or simply run away.

Scratching facer using fingernails also causes pain shock to your enemy and makes him unable to resist for some time. Remembering how dangerous a furious cat can be for people is enough to understand this.

In several cases, a furious cat is known to make its owners hide in one of the rooms and wait for the police to come and help them. Police officers in this situation often have to use guns to protect themselves and rescue the owners of the animal.

Now let’s take a look at a cat, its weight is about 30 times less than that of a man. And this tiny thing can resist police officers armed with firearms. That’s one thing. The other thing is that a common schoolboy, who tortures a cat giving it a hard time, can cope with it, the cat doing nothing to protect itself.

Now you can see the difference between a man employing everything he has at hand to give furious resistance to an assault, and a man who does not resist at all or makes poor attempts to resist.

So we see, at one hand, the enraged and furiously attacking cat that a couple of armed policemen cannot restrain, and, on the other hand, a meek unresisting cat that a little boy can easily handle. The difference is very substantial. This example clearly shows that the more furious and fast you resistance, the more chances you have to win the fight.

I remember a story told me by my disciple about one weak man small in stature, who succeeded in protecting himself against a husky trained fellow with the black belt in taekwondo, who assaulted him.

This small man was so furious and fearless giving his much stronger offender a hail of blows (weak and unskilled as they were) as to shock the guy and made him only try to cover himself from the blows.

One would think what chances had this tiny, middle-aged man, who has never gone in for any sport in a fight against a young and well-trained in taekwondo school guy with the black belt. Any one would say he had no chance. However, it all turned out badly for no one, but the young insolent beggar.

Why, after all, the winner was that small man, who had no chance to win. It is very simple. The moment the fight began, he had his consciousness fully blocked; he acted automatically guided by his subconsciousness.

At the moment, he had nothing in his mind, but the enemy and the thought of disabling that enemy by any means possibly. At that moment, his consciousness was, as it were, at one with the Universe. He feared nothing since the sense of fear was gone from him.

He had neither diffidence nor other impeding factors, that’s why all his actions became TRUE ones. Even though he had not much power and skill, but all he had he putted in each blow. So that’s why, seemingly, with no chance to succeed he won the unequal fight.

Quite contrarily, his enemy was stiffened with fear and uncertainty as a result of this sudden and furious repel. Who could ever dare to attack him, as he was so strong and practiced fighter, he thought. Certainly not this small man, who, as it seemed, was supposed to be trembling with fear.

But it turned out so that it was that strong and trained beef, who had a weak spirit. At the critical moment, his will, composure and fighting skills failed him. He simply got scared and confused, and, as a result, was defeated by a weaker and less skilled opponent.

Mixed martial arts are not only for competitions or tournaments. You can also enjoy its many health benefits. Through regular MMA training, you can enhance flexibility, tone your muscles, and provides excellent cardio workout. After several weeks of training, you can already see improvements in your stamina, strength, and hand-eye coordination. Many individuals who want to lose weight can also benefit from MMA. You can incorporate it in your weight loss program together with proper diet.

If you’re an MMA enthusiast, you will learn many fighting techniques like that from Tae Kwon Do, Jujitsu, Karate, Judo, and many others. Many players of mixed martial arts are able to improve their minds and bodies by engaging in martial arts seriously. If you want to improve the shape of your body, this is an excellent tool to achieve it. Many teachers or instructors also teach their students on how to enhance their spiritual lives. Their mental state also becomes better. All these things you can enjoy without spending many hours in the gym. There are many MMA classes all over the world; both children and adults are already into this combat sport.

If you try to watch a MMA match, you will notice that the players are using combinations of Tae Kwon Do, Jujitsu, Boxing, Tang Soo Do, Wrestling, Grappling, Karate, and other forms of martial arts. The matches follow minimal rules. You can never really tell what will happen in the games. Players use different techniques as they see fit; it is therefore very important to know various fighting techniques so that when you’re in the actual situation, you will know which techniques or martial arts styles to apply.

Before, mixed martial arts did not follow any rules and so the game tends to end up bloody. To ensure the safety of the athletes, minimal rules are already being followed. This is also one way of promoting the game so that it can gain worldwide acceptance. In the recent years, MMA gained widespread acceptance and this is proven by the interest of many individuals in the combat sport, including small kids. Parents support their little ones by allowing them to attend MMA classes. Many people realized the benefits of MMA and because of this, mixed martial arts classes are now widely available.

Competitions are generally safe because of the regulations or rules imposed. In order to compete with other opponents, a player needs to undergo tough physical and mental conditioning. In the recent mixed martial arts games, there wasn’t any news of critical injury or death. You can find MMA classes in schools, youth groups, dojos, church groups, and many other organizations. Classes always start with warm up and stretching exercises. You will also learn how to do jumps, rotations, abs tightening, and squats. You need to wear protective clothing especially during sparring sessions.

Many individuals who attend MMA classes claim that they became healthier and stronger. They also noticed improvements in self confidence and in handling their temper. The things they learned from the mixed martial arts classes can be applied in everyday life. Enroll in a local MMA class now and enjoy the same benefits enjoyed by the athletes.

You don’t have to compete in actual competitions or tournaments. Sparring sessions in class is also good for you so that you can practice the theories you’ve learned.

With the jujitsu system, there is more attention paid to pinning, throwing, choking and strangling techniques. This is different than other systems of martial arts like karate. Even though jujitsu is originally a Japanese system, there are some jujitsu schools that use some Chinese moves.

The danger of jujitsu is that with training, some of the moves can be fatal. Students that have jujitsu classes are usually taught in an environment that is not competitive. Because of that, there is not a lot of risk.

With jujitsu, you will find five main sectors, otherwise known as the arts of training. The five sectors are:

The Art of Blocking (defend against attacks)

The Art of the Fulcrum Throw (used in judo)

The Art of the Non-Fulcrum (throws that have very little contact)

The Art of Escaping (used in different jujitsu styles)

The Art of Striking (do not have body armor)

Fighting systems in martial arts differ from one another. You can’t compare one system with the other because there is no specific objective or standard format for doing so. The systems have their own fighting techniques, methods, and goals. The capacity and ability of the individual to learn various fighting systems will determine his success in the upcoming game matches.

A person’s body is one of the aspects of most fighting systems. Aside from that, the systems also give value to spiritual and philosophical ideals. The Chinese, Korean, and Japanese fighting systems follow the principles of Confusion. There are certain systems which are sports oriented and they follow unique rules which may contradict that of the rules of other systems. Some very good examples are Tae Kwon Do, Judo, and Washu. Reality based or systems which emphasize self defense include Kombato, Jeet Kune Do, and Defendo. Martial arts have different forms and each has its own set of goals and so it can be very difficult to compare them.

However, it’s possible to asses the value of martial arts in teaching fighting disciplines. Some systems focus on unarmed combat while other systems focus on using particular weapons; others focus in self defense, escaping from harm, etc.

Try to find out about the goals of a particular fighting system and use that to assess if the fighting techniques being taught are effective. Observe two forms of martial arts while their players fight each other. One player may be good in hand fighting while the other player has his or her own expertise. When they fight, take note of the effective movements when they were executed. Sparring sessions between different fighting systems is an excellent way to determine the better techniques to se during matches. The UFC allows fighters from different systems to compete with each other. Limited rules are followed to ensure the safety of the players. After the UFC, many other organizations with similar goals entered the world scene.

Cross trainings are now possible through MMA. Fighters of MMA believe in one thing – which is to learn various fighting systems or disciplines. Today, many individuals prefer to fight with fighters from other systems but they no longer want to enter the competitions of the UFC and other organizations. Students fight with other students to prove who is more superior. Teachers don’t encourage this kind of fighting but in reality, it does happen. If you’re a responsible individual, you will not take part in the illegal fights because you might get injured. If you want to fight, join legal competitions.

You can also use mixed martial arts are your personal workout routine. You see, MMA is not just for fighting with other players but it’s also about keeping the body fit and healthy. Once you learn various MMA techniques, incorporate them in your daily workout. Your body needs regular exercise or workout and by doing the various styles or techniques, you’re already providing your body with the needed workout. Also, don’t forget to eat a balanced diet because makes your body stronger. The body needs energy and it comes from the foods you eat; so eat better to live better.

You can’t learn all the fighting systems used in mixed martial arts in a very short time. Just pick the ones you think are effective and enroll in their classes.

In every game, there are rules to follow. With the modern mixed martial arts, several rules are imposed. Through time, the rules changed significantly ever since the Pankration showed up to Japanese shoot wrestling and up to the UFC. As the sport spread out among spectators and fighters, it was agreed upon that rules must not be to a minimal but to an extent, thus, amendments were made. Some of the main motivators for the changes in rules were due to the protection of the fighter’s health, shedding the image of a barbaric bout and most of all, being recognized and appreciated as a sport.

MMA includes different fighting methods or techniques using several forms of martial arts like judo, taekwondo and even karate. This made the people who are concerned with keeping the participants safe to make additional rules in order to maintain an organized competition that avoids any mishaps. New rules involve weight class introductions which was a significant factor. Some of the rules are as follows:

1. Gloves (open-fingered) – introduced to encourage participants to use their hands to strike another participant so as allowing captivating matches, gloves protect the fists when giving out a punch, and reduce any occurrence of cuts.

2. Time – limit in time were emphasized in order to avoid tenacious and long fights. Limiting the time also gives the competitors the chance to conserve their strength for the following round. Technically, matches that doesn’t have any time limit become dull and seem to complicate the airing of events.

3. Stand-up rule - here, the referee has the capacity to stand the fighters up when it’s becoming as if both of them are already resting on the ground or if they are not perceived to be advancing to any dominant position.

4. Clothes – men are usually required to wear shorts, thus being the only attire permissible. To be able to attain leg flexibility combined with durability, there are now different shorts made for MMA fighting.

The gloves mentioned were introduced by Shooto promotion originally coming from Japan. Its use has become mandatory and were adopted later on by the UFC, developing MMA into a regulated event. In the United States, state boxing and athletic commissions have played a very important role introducing the additional sets of rules for the reason that they envisioned MMA to be more similar to boxing.

Some shows have the capacity to use rules that can become more restrictive out of less or inexperienced fighters battling it out for the first time. Europe and Japan has no regulating power and authority to regulate competitions therefore their fighting organizations have greater liberty in developing rules and structuring the event to a much accepted degree.

One of the major prohibitions in MMA is performing a head butt against an opponent. This was no longer an accepted method because, even if it requires lesser effort, head butts can lead to serious damages most especially to the brain. The notion of head butting was taken from the wrestler’s method of taking down their opponent, assaulting them and making a major finish.

A mixed martial arts match will be announced to be victorious if the judges say so after the time allotted has already relapsed, a signal of stopping the fight was made by the referee or by the events doctor, committing a submission, knockout, or if the corner man of the competitor’s side threw a towel.

Before you can play in the various mixed martial arts competitions, you should first undergo tough training sessions given by a qualified instructor. There are many MMA classes all over the world but you can find them mostly in the United States, Japan, and Brazil. By scouring the World Wide Web, you can find a local class that you can check out easily. If you want to become a good fighter in the MMA, these tips can help you.

During your training sessions in mixed martial arts, you should focus in three vital areas. Make sure that you become proficient and comfortable with the said areas because that is the only way to become a good fighter. When you’re already in the competition, the situation is very much different from the sparring sessions you’ve had in the past; so you need to be prepared.

1. Ground game – mixed martial arts are combinations of various fighting systems. You will not be able to win the game if you only know one fighting system. By being well rounded, you have a higher chance of winning. The ground game is very important. You can have your opponent submit for you to win the game. This fighting system is mainly wrestling but it is vital that you choose a decent Jujitsu or grappling instructor.

2. Standup game – fighters don’t always fight on the ground. There are players who fight well in standup games. If you’re good in ground fighting, you should also be good in standup games. Try to learn more of kick boxing or boxing. Muay Thai is an excellent choice if you want to master the standup game. This is excellent for MMA because of the kicking techniques, striking, knee strikes, and clinching.

3. Cardio game – focus on your cardiovascular system. It should be strong so that you can fight well during the game. Even if you’re a good ground and standup fighter, you will not be able to win the game if you have a weak cardiovascular system. Make sure that before you join MMA competitions, your cardio is in excellent condition. An average fighter can easily defeat you if you have a weak cardio system. Find instructors of cardio trainings in your area now and make sure that complete the training sessions.

Try to focus on the ground game, standup game, and cardio game. These will be the keys to your success. If one of them is missing, you will have a weak spot and once your opponent is able to tell that weak spot, you will surely lose.

It may take some time before you can finish all your training sessions but it’s worth the wait. You should be patient, dedicated, and serious. Never hesitate to exert more effort and time in your trainings. By enrolling in established training centers for MMA, you can surely learn all the things mentioned above in no time. If you’re a quick learner, you can easily enhance your skills, fighting techniques, stamina, endurance, and even your behavior.

Instructors can help in improving the behavior of students through mental and spiritual instructions. Certain disciplines are followed by the different fighting systems and you will learn them all. The qualities and knowledge you’ve learned from the trainings can be applied in your everyday life.

Focus in the right trainings and you can succeed as an MMA fighter.

Many years ago, people regarded mixed martial arts as a demanding and unforgiving physical sport. Despite its negative reputation in the past, this combat sport has slowly made its way to public acceptance. It is already part of many world sports events today. If you don’t want your opponent to defeat you in the matches, you should have good reflexes and immense body strength.

Due to the increasing popularity of mixed martial arts, the demand for nutritional supplements and performance enhancing medicines also became huge. Many athletes who want to be well-known in the combat sport take supplements and certain drugs for better performance. However, you should not be careless in using the drugs and supplements because it might cause harmful side effects.

Many healthy individuals take minerals, proteins, vitamins, and carbs supplements. With good health comes good performance; since it is normal for people to get tired and exhausted, having a health body will ensure immediate recuperation. To some people, good health is synonymous to strength but it doesn’t end there. If you’re healthy, you can easily thwart your opponent’s extremely tight grip and your sharp eyes can easily tell the next move.

Since the combat sport involves many strikes and maneuvers, it can easily squeeze alot out f your health. If you tolerate this, you will shorten your longevity. You can only be active in this type of sport at a very short time but by taking the necessary nutrients, you can improve your life’s longevity.

Some athletes say that nutrition is not important when it comes to winning in MMA competitions. Nutrition alone cannot make you a winner in the competition but if you know various fighting skills, styles, and techniques, you can surely win. Still, many athletes who don’t believe in the value of nutrition are able to thwart heavier rivals through superior fighting techniques. But you must also remember that your body will also suffer the most. During a game, your body’s energy is used up. Without proper nutrition, you can’t withstand the wear and tear brought about by the tough trainings and competitions.

Having a healthy body foundation should be given much attention. Supplements and nutrients are vital but it should be taken at the right amounts. Consult your doctor about it so that with his or her help, you can take adequate vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins, and other nutritional supplements. With these things, you can surely enhance your performance, immunity, and physical condition.

If you undergo MMA trainings at an early age, you can learn many different techniques. You should learn techniques of various types of martial arts like Brazilian Jujitsu, Karate, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, etc. Having knowledge in boxing, wrestling, and kickboxing is also an advantage. When you’re young, your body is more flexible as compared if you’re already an adult. Encourage teens and kids to learn various types of martial arts. It’s not just about being a fighter but it’s also about keeping your body healthy. You can even use it as self defense.

There are many informational resources that you can find in books, magazine, eBooks, and other materials about mixed martial arts. Try to exert more effort and time in your mixed martial arts classes to enjoy its many benefits. If you dedicate yourself to the MMA trainings, you will notice huge improvements in your state of mind, physical body, and overall health.

Ground

If the person is on the ground, combat can keeping going on the ground. They cannot drop to the ground to start ground fighting. The two people try to get a hold down or force submission from their opponent. This is done by using strangulation, arm lock or a choke. With the arm lock, the lock can only be used on the elbow joints due to safety concerns.

Standing

With standing, the opponents try to throw one another. They hardly use submission techniques of joint lock and choke strangulation. It is difficult to use these techniques because of the standing phase. However there are some judoka that can handle takedowns along with submission. With the submission, it starts with the standing phase and ends being on the ground.

The throwing techniques are used to take an opponent down. The opponent is usually standing up on their feet. In that position, they are considered to be a danger. When they come down, they come down on their back in order for them to have limited mobility. This helps you to control the opponent and make you be the dominant one.

With this stance, the practitioner can provide an outcome. Throwing the opponent is also used to their body into shock. This happens when their body is forcefully smashed to the ground. A match can be won if the opponent uses a controlled throw that is powerful. Lesser throws receive a lower score. With a standing position, a person will get a score for a throw.

Throwing techniques are based on four different facets: off-balancing, positioning of your body, execution and finishing. Each facet comes very quickly after the previous one is completed.

Hold downs

An attacker is required to hold down their opponent for a certain amount of time. This helps the attacker to have an effective target for striking. You would get scored on the length of time of the hold down. The hold down can also end in a submission from the opponent if they can’t take the pressure any longer.

Joint locks

These combat techniques when a judoka has control over their opponent using what is called a pain compliance technique. This technique is a grappling hold that implements one of three things: compression lock, joint lock or pressure point.

One of these is used to keep the opponent down and the judoka in control. This technique is used as a self-defense mechanism. A judoka can also control their opponent by breaking the locked joint. You can perform a joint lock on the elbow because that is considered a safe place to do it. Doing this can cause the opponent to claim submission. Attacking any other joints can cause serious injury.

A sensei is a judo teacher. With the western culture, the teachers are referred to as a “dan grade sensei”. It used to be used only for a certain group, but now it can be used for anyone that teaches judo.

Practitioners wear a judogi, which is a white uniform that is worn when performing judo. There were uniforms that looked similar that came along after the first one came out. The uniform is made of cotton and the pants are usually white and blue.

The pants come with a drawstring so the waist can be adjusted. The top is actually a white or blue cotton jacket that is quilted and is accompanied by a belt. The belt is used to close the jacket. The belt will be a certain color to signify rank. The jacket is used to endure grappling, which is why the uniform has more thickness than a uniform used for karate.

During a competition, a blue judogi is worn by one of the competitors. This helps to distinct one from the other for the spectators, referees and judges. The Japanese judoka use a white judogi and a red sash. For minor competitions, a colored sash can be used. If this is a regional or higher level competition, only the blue judogi can be used.

Techniques

Judo has two categories of combat, the ground and the standing phase. Both phases use different techniques, conditioning and strategies. In order to close the gap, training is implemented for changing techniques. There are some judoka that may know more in one area than they do in others.

With the ground and standing phases of combat, the judoka can bring opponents down, pin and submit them on the ground. Since this is considered a balanced method, judo is a martial art that people want to learn.

Judo

Judo actually came from Jujitsu and was out of sync for a while. However, there are people that still incorporate judo as a martial arts technique. It does not rely on tactics that involve karate, kicking or punching. Judo does not rely on throwing and grappling, either.

With judo, you grip your opponent and place them off balance. Kuzushi is used to supply a small amount of energy while engaging in judo. Even though judo was birthed from jujitsu, there are some differences between the two. Kuzushi happens when the opponent is hit along the weak line. There is also twisting, grabbing or poking of the points of the atemi (pressure points).

Judo also implements some throw, falls, rolls, chokes, hold downs, strikes and joint-locks. There are ground fighting techniques that are used to go against the joints or joint locks. These techniques also affect chokeholds and strangleholds, along with techniques of pinning down or holding.

Judo uses sparring, which means “free practice”. There are also techniques of striking that involve punching and kicking. In addition to that there are techniques that implement swords and knives.

In Judo, there are only certain people that can implement joint locking, chokeholds and sacrifice techniques due to safety issued. It all depends on how old you are and what your rank is. In the United States, chokeholds can be used by people 13 years old and older, while arm locks can be used by people 16 years old and older.

When a joint lock or chokehold is used, the other person will tap the mat or their opponent twice. This will let them know that they have yielded to the other person. You will know that the one that yielded was the loser and they are released from the chokehold or joint lock.

A Judoka is a practitioner of judo. A judoka is one that is experienced in the techniques of judo. A judoka can mean any judo practitioner minus the level restrictions. So even if the judoka is just starting out, they are still a judoka.

We will discuss the biting, gouging, poking and grasping techniques that are used in Jujitsu. These techniques were implemented in order for the attacker to have an advantage of their opponent.

Since their opponent would use ways that were undesirable, the attacker had to counter with techniques that could overpower the opponent. They were considered a defense for the attacker against the opponent.

Biting

The target spots for biting are the ears, nose and fingers. This technique can be used for attacks such as bear hugs. Biting can also be used where a person can attack their opponent’s face, hand or fingers.

Gouging

Gouging is a poking technique that attacks the eyes or genital areas of the body. This distracts the opponent and causes them great pain. This technique is used as an attack method of when one is defending themselves from an opponent. When a person gouges an attacker’s eyes, they can control their opponent’s balance.

Poking

When you are poking, you target the pressure points of the eyes. This is good to use to defend yourself against grabs from your opponent. It can also be used for grappling purposes. If the opponent is winning over you, it can be used as a defense mechanism. With poking, you would use your fingers and knuckles.

Grasping

With the grasping method, you can attack the groin or any sensitive area of the body. In order to apply this technique, you can distract your opponent by causing pain. The areas affected by this include the ears, hair, nipples, and skin.

Atemi is when you strike the pressure points or psychological areas of an opponent. What this does is the opponent cannot move around to strike back. Atemi is used to strike the body so that it will trigger a psychological reaction. It can also be used to distract an opponent and causes the opponent to try another technique.

Takedown

A takedown is when an opponent is dragged to the floor using the attacker’s body weight. They can also be taken to the floor if their attacker uses a strike against them. The legs of the opponent are such where they cannot move. The opponent gets floored using brutal force. The balance may be broken by tricking the motion of the opponent. With takedowns a lot of strength is used from the body and when the balance is broken, it’s just broken. There is no skill to it.

With the different styles of jujitsu, there are various ways that the techniques are applied. Here are some of the applications and how they are applied to this sport:

Rolling

A forward shoulder roll involves rolls using the palm-down and palm-up method. A backward should roll requires landing on your hip on the far side, in the palm down method.

Arm Bars

When performing an arm bar technique, some use a “hand open” method. Others simply use their fist. With both techniques, there is supposedly increased power. However, it has been proven that the closed fist method provides more of an advantage. This helps to prevent fingers from having an accident or getting snagged in the process.

Wrist Locks

Wrist locks use the bottom three fingers without the index finger. Other methods use the top three fingers without the pinky. Both methods have the same effect to not block the wrist of the opponent with this technique.

Grappling

The difference with grappling is if the style of it is considered a sport or is it a need for training for self-defense purposes. Both are legit, and there is some overlap with the training. However, there will be differences. With the self-defense portion, there are factors in regard to the position of grappling. With the sport, the main focus is to get up and away as quickly as you can.

In martial arts, a throw is a techniques used in grappling. A throw can pick up an opponent and toss them on the ground. This techniques uses rotation in order for it to be effective. The person that does the throw is not in sync with their opponent and comes up on their feet.

They can also use what is called a “top position”. This is when the person that initiates the throw connects with the opponent. There are certain techniques in throwing that are referred to as “sacrifice throws”. These throws consist of the person allowing themselves to be at a disadvantage. They will be on the ground in order to perform a throw.

There are different types of throws in martial arts. One of the better known ones is judo. It has plenty of techniques for throwing and they consider them one of their special ones. The names of the different throws are connected with Jujitsu throws.

The Japanese have been known to do it this way. In western martial arts, they give them names in English, primarily so their students will know them.

Here are the types of throws associated with Jujitsu:

Leg throws – Leg throws consist of reaps and trips. A leg reap is when a person uses a leg to gather up one of both legs of their opponent from the ground. The weight of the opponent is on the leg that is taken up.

The attacked is able to control the body of the opponent using their hands. This causes the opponent to lose their balance and fall. A leg trip uses the attacker lifting the leg instead of gathering it up. When the opponent’s leg is lifted, it is being pulled up and swung away.

Shoulder throws – This type of throw is used when throwing the opponent from the ground over the attacker’s shoulder. A shoulder drop is when an opponent is dropped to the ground and pulled over the shoulder.

Hip throws – The thrower’s hip is used by putting the hip in a lower position. It would be lower than the opponent’s midpoint of gravity. Beginners usually learn O Goshi. With judo, hip throws are referred to as Koshi Waza.

Pick-ups – When a pick-up is performed, the opponent is lifted from the ground and then brought down again. Pick-ups are used in techniques such as hand throws and the double leg takedown.

Sacrifice throws – The thrower is disadvantaged and may fall to the ground. When the body falls, there is additional strength with the throws. During the effect, there is not much strength.

Strike – A strike is performed using a weapon or your body. It’s performed to affect their opponent or to cause harm to them. There are different kinds of strikes. One is an attack using their fist which is referred to as a punch; using the leg or foot is called a kick; using the head is called a head butt.

Principles of Striking

In martial arts, strikes are performed with your body. Martial artists learn them through constant repetitions being trained by an instructor. The instructor must be qualified to do this.

Here are some of the principles of striking that martial artists employ for themselves:

Breathing – A shout works to tighten the muscles at the beginning of impact. This works to scare the opponent. Strikers will exhale once they get close to their opponent. Controlling your breathing is used to get your body relaxed during a period of not attacking.

Footwork – In order to balance your body, you need the right footwork. This helps to support a mixture of strikes and start strikes from the right area. This is not the easiest part of striking. You have energy coming from your legs and taking the advantage to throw combinations. When you’re doing this, your footwork must be in exact form.

Muscular Tension – As a striker, your muscles get tense while you are trying to relax during the strike. Your muscles are tense during impact, and then they relax again to withdraw the striking. When you relax, the strike is allowed to get as much speed while it’s traveling. There is the highest transfer of force during impact.

Combinations – In order for strikers to get strikes to impact their opponent, they can use different techniques to do this. The attacks are aimed at different parts of your body. The strongest force uses a certain technique.

Penetration – Strikers should shoot for getting at least 4 – 6 inches behind the surface of the target. This helps to bring the maximum energy to it. When a striker is in combat, they should try to strike through the target and not just the surface.

Focus – Strikers can force through an attacker’s body. However, make it a small area of the body. When you as a striker, focus on that, you can get penetration and enlarge the impact damage.

Gravity – Gravity helps strikes that start upward and come downward and elbows that come downward and stomp kicks.

Summation of Force – Muscles use a certain sequence to get as much force as possible. Strikes can be done by moving body weight that will hold up the blow. This is different than an arm or a leg that strikes.

Timing and Rhythm – The memory of muscle, along with repetitious moves are use to begin strikes. The momentum has a flow and there is a knowing that there will be some type of action. The striker can have an edge if the flow is interrupted.

Telegraphing – This is when the striking body is moved before the blow occurs. This lets the opponent know that the strike possibly won’t be effective. The weapon that is striking should be the first to move. Then the body should move after it. For this to be effective there has to be precise footwork and distancing.

Deception – Distractions are used to throw off how strikers are going to attack. They will use things such as noise, hand movements, switching guard positions, etc. These gestures help to trick their opponent and they end up letting their guard down.

Attack Level – The level of attack can differ. If can be a kick to the ribs or the opponent’s head getting jabbed. When strikers use various levels of attack on their opponent, the opponent’s guard is let down.
